Choices Books: The Concept

The wild popularity of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series told us all a couple of things. First, boys will read books, if they’re the right books. Second, the didactic style lately adopted by children’s literature publishers does not produce the right books.

Children want several things from fiction. They crave control. They want adventure, stories that take them away from the ordinary world with its irritations and stresses. They want the heroes of their books to be in terrible trouble, and the villains to be larger than life. They want to vicariously enjoy these adventures with the hero.

Several decades ago, a book series brought all these elements together. The Choose Your Own Adventure series allowed young readers to guide heroes through the most terrifying adventures. Endings were varied, and might even result in the hero’s death.

Choices Books, while in no way affiliated with any other Choose Your Own Adventure style books, will be using this uniquely powerful style to retell favorite and obscure tales of adventure, hope, and grace from the Bible, blending history in with Christianity. Many of our books will be free in electronic formats. The first in this series retells the story of Noah.
